Architects are turning to CI to deal with the new regulations of complying with green building practices. The rules aim to save energy and meet the set budget. CI is an effective way of improving insulation and blocking thermal bridges. It improves thermal performance by enriching the wall assembly and providing proper control of vapor.
CI adds a water-resistant barrier and offers protection against the wind and fire. Insulation covers several parts, including the following:
- Interior furring
- Insulated cavities
- Foamed panel systems
- Masonry systems
The relative performance of each insulation system depends on a couple of factors. The R-factor has the potential of meeting the specific needs of the projects and changing the aesthetics of the building.
Star R Foam is a CI insulation manufacturer with several types of insulation designs and techniques. The differentiation of each type determines which one will serve the architect’s requirement of energy consumption. Here are a couple of classifications:
Star R Foam’s R-Factors
This category has the most economical rigid class. It has an R-value of approximately R-4 for each inch and is common for the following applications:
- Load bearing blocks
- Floating augmentation
- Panel insulation
- Roof insulation
The main perk of this type is that it has a decent level of breathability. It, therefore, does not allow the growth of fungi and bacteria
This foam is usually in the colors blue or pink. It has a smooth plastic surface and a wide array of thicknesses and edge properties. It has an R-value of five for each inch and is common in the residential constructions because of its versatility. It has a better resistance against water and therefore lasts longer than its alternatives.
This foam has an R-value of 6.5 for each inch. It is the most expensive and has different types of reflective foil on each side. The superior properties make it excellent for use in massive commercial constructions and complicated residential properties.
Foams variation in density are in two classifications:
The key differences between these types determine the eventual implications of the insulation. Closed-Cell foam has more density than an open cell and therefore has a higher R-value for each volume, of between five to eight inches. It offers the following improved properties:
- Better resistance against transmission of water vapor
- Higher rigidity
- Superior structure integrity
- Better insulation for the same amount of thickness as an open-cell – This benefit is convenient in creating proper insulation for tight spaces because a one-inch layer of closed-cell foam has the same efficiency as a two-inch foam of open-cell foam.
These foams have more porosity than closed-cell CI. They have an R-value of between three and four for each inch. The main flaw of this foam is that it tends to absorb more moisture in both vapor and moisture form.
